By the end of each marking period, students can perform the following functions:

Marking Periods 1 (47 days), 2 (43 days), 3 (43 days), 4 (47 days)

Days 1-7

Unit 1: The Origins of Communication (7 days)

 

Functions/Objectives: I can...

·         ­define and describe Communication (non-verbal, verbal, & visual)

·         define and describe Language

·         define and identify language families

·         define culture and subculture (products, practices, and perspectives)

·         discuss stereotypes and recognize similarities between languages.

 

Unit 2: Latin (7 days)

 

Functions/Objectives: I can...

·         understand basic history of the Latin languages as well as ancient Rome and their contributions to modern-day society

·         define and identify Latin derivatives

·         say the letters of the alphabet

·         identify Latin roots, prefixes, and suffixes

·         use and respond to greetings including introductions to good-bye

·         identify and use Roman Numerals.

 

Unit 3:  French* (12 days)

 

Functions/Objectives: I can...

·         define the word francophone, locate a francophone country on a map

·         name important dates and events from French history

·         say the letters of the alphabet and use them with a purpose

·         use numbers from 1 -20

·         make introductions, ask and tell how someone is feeling, ask for and state age, and ask and tell where someone is from

 

 

*French teachers may do French before Spanish and Spanish teachers may do Spanish before French. In other words, these two languages may be inter-changed in order depending on the expertise of the teacher.

 

Unit 4:  Spanish* (12 days)

·         identify and locate Spanish-speaking countries and flags

·         name important dates and events from Spanish history

·         say the letters of the alphabet and use them with a purpose

·         use numbers from 0 -20

·         make introductions, ask and tell how someone is feeling, ask for and state age, and ask and tell where someone is from

 

 

Unit 5: Non-Roman Alphabet Languages: Japanese, Korean, Arabic &/or Others (7 days)

·         identify key elements of Japanese culture (geography, facts and figures, clothing, foods, the art of Origami, expressions of courtesy)

·         identify key elements of the Korean and/or Arabic culture (geography, facts and figures, clothing, foods, and more)
