April is upon us, which means we are coming to our last nine weeks of school and our SOL tests are right around the corner. This is an extremely important time of year for us because teachers are finishing up their curriculums and planning reviews for the tests. We have had a great stretch of school with only a two day break for snow. Hopefully the students and staff take advantage of the spring break to renew their spirits to finish the year strong. It is imperative as parents that we do everything possible to support the teachers and what is going on in the classroom.
We will again be taking our SOL tests on-line. It is a great feature because we will have our results within minutes after the students take the test. A feature that was put into place two years ago will again be available to students who score between 399 and 375. They may be allowed to take an expedited retake. This gives the student a second chance on a test that they narrowly missed passing. By getting these results so quickly, it allows us the opportunity to plan summer school remediation and put into place plans for next year and how we can better serve all our children. SOL testing is right around the corner which means we will be starting our SOL Review Academies. We will publish a schedule as soon as that is set up.
In addition, we will be holding test talks on May 3rd and May 4th with selected students to help encourage students to finish the year as well as they can. We will review their testing data and what they may need to do to be successful. I find these talks very enlightening for me as well as the students. Hopefully it will help motivate them to do their best on the upcoming tests. The SOL tests are very important to us because it is the only snapshot that the state and public get to see of Stonewall Middle School. I try to accentuate this to the students that they need to take the tests seriously and give their best effort. It would be a waste of a year’s work not to.
A great event that I always love, occurring this month, is Positive Referral Day on April 19, 2017. The kids have a great time being honored for their good behavior. Our school tries very hard to make sure our students are recognized when they do well in the classroom, as well as on their behavior.
Spring is a time of re-energizing and coming with new life. Our students need to renew themselves with a resolve that they will give their best effort over the remainder of the school year. The teachers have many great things planned for them so they can be excited about coming to school. I ask that our parents help us in motivating our students through the beautiful springtime. It is very difficult with all the distractions that spring brings, but I am sure if we all work together, we will be successful in the end.
